How to choose a web host
Updated October 2026
The right host is the one that fits your site today and won't punish you when it grows. Five questions get you there faster than any feature list.
1. What are you building?
- A blog or personal site: cheap shared hosting is enough. Hostinger and DreamHost are good starting points.
- A business website: look for daily backups, good support and a solid uptime record. SiteGround and Liquid Web fit well.
- An online store: stores need more server power and help when checkout breaks. Managed hosts like Kinsta, Rocket.net and Liquid Web handle WooCommerce well.
- Client sites: agencies need staging, many sites per plan and easy hand-off. See our list of the best hosting for agencies.
2. How much traffic do you expect?
Under 10,000 visits a month, almost any host will do. Past 100,000, you want managed WordPress or a cloud server. Watch for visit caps: WP Engine, Kinsta, Flywheel and Pressable charge overage fees if you exceed your plan's visits.
3. How technical are you?
Managed WordPress hosts handle updates, caching and security for you. Cloud hosts like Cloudways give you more power per dollar but expect you to make more decisions.
4. What will you pay at renewal?
This is where most people get caught out. Many hosts advertise a first-term price that jumps three to six times at renewal. Read our guide to hosting renewal prices before you prepay for years.
5. What happens if something breaks?
Check that backups are daily and included, that support is 24/7, and whether phone support is on your plan or only on a higher tier.
Use the money-back guarantee. Most hosts give you 30 days, and InMotion Hosting gives 90. Move your site, test it for a couple of weeks, and leave if it's slow.
