Short answer: most hosting bills jump because the intro term ended. Before you pay the higher price, try these seven steps in order. The first three take ten minutes; the last can cut your bill by half or more.
1. Check what you're actually paying for
Log in to your host's billing page and list every line item. Domain privacy, backup tools, security scanners and SEO add-ons are often added at checkout and renew automatically.
2. Remove add-ons you don't use
Cancel anything you don't need. Free alternatives exist for most of them: a free backup plugin, the free SSL your host includes, and your host's own malware scanning.
3. Ask support for a renewal discount
Contact support before your renewal date and ask: "My plan renews at $X. Is there a discount available if I renew?" Many hosts have retention offers they don't advertise.
4. Change your billing term
Longer terms usually cost less per month. SiteGround's StartUp plan, for example, renews at $14.99 a month on a 24-month term versus $17.99 on a 12-month term and $24.99 billed monthly. Only lock in a term you're sure about.
5. Downgrade your plan
If you bought a bigger plan "just in case", check your real usage. Most small sites fit easily on an entry plan.
6. Move your domain to a cheaper registrar
Domains bundled with hosting often renew at a higher price than at a dedicated registrar. Moving the domain doesn't touch your website.
7. Move to a host that doesn't raise prices
If the renewal price is still too high, switch. These hosts charge the same, or nearly the same, at renewal:
| Host | Price | Renews at |
|---|---|---|
| Namecheap | $2.28/mo | $4.66/mo |
| Liquid Web | $5/mo | $6/mo |
| Rocket.net | $25/mo | Same price |
| Kinsta | $30/mo | Same price |
