Short answer: many managed WordPress hosts sell plans by monthly visits, and charge an overage fee when you go over. If your traffic is growing or unpredictable, choose a host that doesn't count visits, such as Rocket.net or Liquid Web.

Visit limits on entry plans

What counts as a visit

A "visit" is usually one unique visitor in a 24-hour period, counted from the host's own server logs. That's why your host's number can be higher than Google Analytics, which ignores most bots and anyone blocking scripts. Some hosts filter bots; WP Engine started excluding suspected bots from billable visits in September 2025.

How to avoid overage fees

  1. Check your usage monthly in your host's dashboard, not just your analytics.
  2. Block bad bots with your host's firewall or a security plugin, so scrapers don't eat your allowance.
  3. Upgrade before a known spike, such as a launch or a sale. It's usually cheaper than overages.
  4. Choose a host without visit counting if your traffic jumps around.

Visit limits vs bandwidth limits

Hosts that don't count visits usually limit bandwidth (data sent to visitors) and storage instead. For most WordPress sites, bandwidth is the friendlier limit, because a viral post with light pages uses little data. Image-heavy or video sites should check bandwidth allowances closely.
